Effin’ Blogger

Effin’ Blogger ate my wonderful post from this morning.

I’ll re-create it but it had so much improvisational energy that the second draft is not going to capture, dammit.

And that whole “Recover post” thing? No work-y this time.

Always

The great thing about technical problems is that there is always a technical solution. Unlike, say, human problems.

Suddenly awake

Dreaming, asleep.

Suddenly awake with a black furry demonically-horned face even with mine.

The “pad-pad-pad” sound of his feet on the mattress pounding into my brain microseconds after the visual impact.

I scream. “Startled” almost comically inadequate to describe the instantaneous jolt that seizes me top to bottom.

Then just as suddenly I realize it’s simply Smacky. I’m in bed. He’s sticking his nose into my face. I reach up and chuck him under the chin. He purrs.

And even though adrenaline had shot through my body just now, and there’s a tightness in my chest, my heart… is not pounding. My breath does not come in gasps.

The quickness of the total transition, from sleep, to startled, to post-startled, taking far longer to describe than it actually happened.

I hope you understand

Sorry I haven’t been blogging as much lately.

I have an actual office now.

I’ve never had a job where I had an actual office before.

It’s nice.

My new actual office is dark, and warm, and isolated, and I get zero total natural light.

I love it. It’s perfect.

“La Science des rĂªves”

…known in America as “The Science of Sleep”, the new movie from director Michel Gondry.

In short, it is sweet and sad and funny and mean.

It’s everything. So good.

If you consider movies to be like waking dreams, this movie will take you several steps farther.

I love the fact that Gondry uses old-fashioned film and camera tricks, rather than state-of-the-art computer-generated special effects. It makes his movies feel homemade. Crafted, rather than manufactured. For me, the realism of the way the film is put together grounds the irreality of the story… I also liked the way that the three languages spoken in the film (English, French and Spanish) mirrored the weird dyslexia we feel in dreams.

And Gael Garcia Bernal is simply amazing in this.

Go. Dream along with Gondry.

Oblique attack

I had a dream last night that I was part of a huge crowd in a field that stretched to the horizon, and as we watched, giant round metal doors opened up, throwing the dirt and plants aside, and huge missles, hundreds of them, were launched.

The crowds cheered and danced but I felt the opposite because I knew (in my dream) that these bombs were so huge they would damage the entire planet.

Dreams are usually about processing the things you’ve encountered during the day. So was that dream triggered by who is currently in the White House?

Or was it because I learned that REM member Peter Buck owns the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle?

“It’s the end of the world as we know it… and I feel fine…”

I just got an email that says:

“Love is just click away.”

Love? How about grammar? Is that just click away, too?

iTunes 7.0

The new iTunes is so… sexy…

CoverFlow rocked, and now it rocks even more that it’s actually in iTunes. Kudos to Apple to buying the company, instead of giving them the shaft like they (apparently) did to the Watson folk.

And the best part – most of the goodies will work on my 5G iPod Video. I don’t have to buy a new one. Games? I can play the games. Gapless playback? Yep, it works on my iPod now (after the update).

There’s even a new feature: when scrolling quickly through a list of song, artists, or albums, it used to be hard to stop where I wanted because scrolling would speed up as I went, and I would often overshoot where I was trying to get to. But now, when scrolling, there’s a letter corresponding to my spot on the list superimposed over the top of the list. So. Cool.

The only movie I’d like to download is “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, but since I’m boycotting Disney now I’ll have to take a pass.

What’s that? You say I should be boycotting Apple products, too, since Steve Jobs is Disney’s largest shareholder?

That’s just crazy talk.

I could no more boycott Apple than I could stop being supa-cool.
