New to B5? The Joy of Jumping In, by Erika Ensign

Ms. Ensign co-hosts a podcast about Babylon 5, the first serialized novel-for-TV that I was aware of. It seemed groundbreaking at the time, though now it’s a standard format that’s given us awesome entertainment like Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

And this essay suggests that binge-watching-from-the-beginning shouldn’t be the default if you’re new to a serialized show.

They don’t draw that line at cinematography – if a film were out of focus, or if it were continuously framed in such as a way as to obscure what was happening onscreen no one would say “What did you expect, Citizen Kane?”
