First post - Ground rules

This is where any excerpts of my work-in-progress will appear, possibly as soon as shortly after midnight on 1 November 2006, and continuing until close to midnight 30 November 2006, as per the rules of NaNoWriMo.

Note that comments are turned off for these posts by default. I love feedback, but I ask that you refrain from sending me anything that might be considered a story idea. The novel I'm going to write feels as though it already exists in my head. I have a character, and a situation for him to overcome, and every time I think about it, I can flash on scenes from the story, or characters he'll encounter, or things he says or is said to him... like flashes of a remembered story, rather than one I haven't actually written yet. So I'd prefer that no one says anything to me that might distract me from the story that needs to be told, until I'm done with the contest.

Does that seem odd? Selfish? Miserly? I'm sorry. It's part of my whole "I want to do it all myself" ethic. I'm just wired that way, it seems.

Also, even though I have in mind a fairly linear story, I may or may not write the whole thing in order. I'm not going to limit myself to that in advance. I'm going to write what needs to be written, when I can or feel like it. It may seem confusing, and I may have to come up with a numbering system to keep it all straight. I'll worry about that later.

Don't be surprised if the template for this page changes. I have in mind a simple, clean, two-column style, that will mimic a manuscript page, but haven't taken the time to write one up. When I do, I'll implement it here.

I can't think of anything else that I need to say in advance. Wish me luck!
